Wheel arrangement 2-4-4-2 & 2-4-4-2 for each loco, comprised of two units to make complete locomotive. When purchased in 1915 were originally class E and numbered 6.
Specifications: builder: Baldwin-Westinghous as 1 of 12 at cost of $41736 for each unit or about twice cost of comparable 2-6-6-2 class Z steam locomotive. Tractive power 66000 at 14 mph. Weight engine 600000. Electric power derived from overhead catenary carrying 44000 volts, which was converted to 11000 volt to drive 8 3-phase traction motors, geared to Jack Shaft and side rods to driving wheels. Original electrification from Bluefield, West Virginia to West Vivian for 29.4 miles, and later extended. Discontinued 1950, with steam replacing electricity, one of the very few times it ever did. Built July 1915 and scrapped in 1951. Compiled: 30 January 1975 AMBSr. |
