Jim Cochran ******************************************************** At 5 AM, on the morning of March 1st, 1897, 4-4-0 R/N 3 leading N&W train #88 was involved in a head-on collision with 4-6-0 R/N 77 at Island Ford, VA. The 4-4-0 derailed and was turned broadside in the wreck, pushed along by the ensuing pileup of freight cars. Repair of the engine was deemed uneconomical. Ten-wheeler R/N 77 was running south to Roanoke as a light engine. It was deemed repairable and taken to Roanoke for rebuilding, emerging as a simple-cylindered locomotive in July. Mason Cooper |
